The Silk Goddess Gown is pretty gorgeous, huh? Georgette Williams, pictured left, is the gifted designer who created it and we reckon she’s one for the fashion industry to keep an eye on, given the scale of her ambition.

We thought it’d be fun to ask her the same questions that were put to that other fashion superstar Vivienne Westwood by the V&A at her 2004 exhibition. Here’s what she had to say:

CWG: How did you get into the world of fashion?

GW: Really it was a hobby that turned into a career. As a child I always wanted to be fashionable and trendy, we couldn't always afford new clothing and my mum usually made our clothes because sewing was her hobby as well. I would look in magazines, point to what I wanted and she would make it (usually with a lot more fabric added to that mini skirt design).

After I moved to London in 2002 from America, with the hopes of working in the tourism industry, I ended up working for a London high street fashion retailer and even though I didn't mind selling clothing, there wasn't really much chance for my creativity to shine through. So I left and started working for a smaller fashion boutique in Carnaby St, London, where they sold the work of independent designers.

I used to make one off designs and do a lot of recycled fashion at the time (taking old clothing and turning them in to a new design) for my friends. Then I started selling the one off clothing in the boutique. I never really considered myself a fashion designer making whole collections. But people really started taking notice of my clothing and I figured ‘why not’? I had a fashion show and received a great review from it and that as they say is how the "legend" began…

CWG: What is your favourite fabric to work with and why?

GW: I used to practice with a lot of jersey (viscose jersey) when I first started out and got really comfortable with it. I really like the way it drapes. Now I don't mind working with any fabric because it is always a challenge.

I never studied any kind of fashion or took sewing/technical classes, so there is a bit of fashion technicalities that I don't know about. It is usually a new experience to work with certain fabrics. I love finding out for myself how a certain fabric works, what I can or cannot do with it and how it drapes.

For my Autumn/Winter 2009, I worked with leather and boy! That was very new.. But I ended up with fabulous modern wearable leather dresses and skirts in the collection.

CWG: What kind of outfit would you like to have designed for you?

GW: I usually wear my own designs.. Something that compliments my body type very well and also something in a fabulous color. I love color. Something I can fold away easily and can care for very easily and wear over and over again. I am very laid back and don't fuss around with my clothing too much.

I also do a lot of running around during the day, so it has to allow me to do that but it also has to be able to carry me through the night. I have this jersey 3/4 sleeve dress from my Winter 2007 collection, that I wear all the time.

I have it in 3 different colors and two lengths; I can pair the longer length with tights and flats or boots for the day or dress up the shorter length for evening. The fabric and design has lots of movement in it, so it’s really comfortable.

CWG: As a designer, do you suffer from moments of creative block? If so, how do you overcome them?

GW: Oh yes all the time… Usually I go home to America and see my family, it's always good to get away from the fast paced London life.

My boyfriend and closest friends are also a great help, I ask them what they would like to see out there in fashion or what they would like to have in their wardrobe that isn't in shops and get some inspiration from there.

You have to let everything and anything inspire you. You spend more time doing research but I can make a whole 20 piece collection in 2-3 weeks - its like once that light bulb goes on, there is no stopping you.

CWG: As a child did you dream of a life like this?

GW: You know when I was really little, I actually dreamt of being in fashion. I remember watching an haute couture show as a kid one day and thought wow! I want that life.

I don't even remember what designer it was, but I remember video taping the show and watching it over and over again. I even did some catwalk modelling. Somewhere between High School and University, that dream faded but it must have always been in the back of my mind because look where I am today.

I do it for the passion and to make people feel empowered by my clothing. As I have come to realize, this is my passion in life and I don't want to do anything else right now but design, eventually I want to expand into other avenues but still in the creative/ fashion industry. Look out for my global empire, coming your way soon....
